Tomorrow Together Charter
We, the undersigned, agree that Aotearoa must embrace a policy and legislative framework that ensures accountability to future generations and the stewardship of te taiao. If you agree with the following principles, we invite you to sign on to this Charter.
We believe that:
Intergenerational responsibility and accountability is crucial
Decision makers must have accountability for the long-term impacts and implications of their decisions on the future.
A Future Generations Act is needed
NZ currently lacks a sufficient legislative lever to require current generations to consider the future. The development of a Future Generations Act, and Commissioner for Future Generations, could act as an accountability mechanism.
Te Ao Māori provides a model for intergenerational thinking
Māori leadership, tikanga, and principles such as kaitiakitanga have long embodied intergenerational thinking. These values can guide us toward a just and thriving Aotearoa for the present and future.
Global examples, like Wales, prove change is possible
The success of the Welsh Future Generations Act demonstrates the potential for embedding long-term thinking into policy. Aotearoa can draw learnings from this model, and the work to date of Foundations for Tomorrow in Australia, to ensure sustainable progress across generations.
