Tomorrow Together Discussion Document Sept 2025
Imagine an Aotearoa New Zealand where the wellbeing of future generations and the natural world, te taiao, are central to all policy and legislative decisions. Imagine a country where the choices we make today are guided by long-term thinking and a deep sense of responsibility and accountability to those who come after us.
Our decision-making frameworks in Aotearoa New Zealand are currently not well-designed to protect long-term interests, not least those of future generations. Weak accountability for future-focused decision-making, siloed planning tools and short electoral cycles mean Aotearoa New Zealand’s governance is poorly equipped to tackle intergenerational issues. This is evident today, among other things, in the state of our environment, including biodiversity decline, and worsening income and wealth inequality.
Throughout this discussion document we pose a range of questions which we hope can start a national conversation on how we can collectively determine which policy levers are best for Aotearoa to use. We hope these spark reflection in you and are brought to life through conversations with MPs, community leaders, friends, and whānau thus guiding the next steps of this journey moving forward.
These are questions for all of us, in our shared responsibility to be good ancestors.
